Here is a portrait study. I wanted to work on the planes of the face, and I found this photograph perfect for such a study:

Obviously it doesn't look anything like it :/ But I still think it turned out pretty well.

All done in Painter using the graphite brush and some of the smudge brushes.

no need to be fully accurate, especially for a portrait, which is really hard to keep the likeness, but til the structure and the light is good, then it's ok ! and you managed to it , so congrat ^^ ! keep it up !

Thanks! I am starting to understand that fundamental of art now. ^_^ And my main goal was the structure and lighting, so mission accomplished! :D

Thank you. I have to look more through your gallery, too. You have great contrasting photos ^_^

Even if it looks nothing like the original photo, we'd never know that if you didn't show it to us. You've still created an image that is more than convincing, and we have no doubt that this is a person we're looking at. Drawing, as an art form, has never been about exactness. You did just fine. :D

Thanks ^_^ I kind of wanted to get close as an attempt to help me "draw what I see" because I need more experience with life drawing. I am still happy with the image, too ^_^

If you're really after being more precise, I'd say just spend a little bit more time on the initial sketch before you start throwing the tones in. You got a lot of the details right, and what's off is pretty minor (from an adjustment point of view). From what I can see you just got the jaw angles a bit off, leading to a wider face. A pretty easy fix is you catch it while still sketching.

Yeah...that means translating into values without actually doing it, and I am not very good at that yet ^_^; I know that shadows tend to make the shape look thinner when done right, but in the initial sketch when I set the lines they always look too wide so I make them more narrow...or I wait to add the value and try to adjust afterward. Either way doesn't work so well ^_^ But I am getting there. I also have to seperate my faces. All my figure drawing classes are Japanese models and I see the Asian face far more often now then Western. They tend to be wider in some places. ^_^
