Description

Happy Halloween! This is for a sketch swap done by :iconthe-sketch-society: . The request was by :icongwynconawayart:
who stated "something Halloween!"

I have never done horror before, so this was a challenge on so many levels. There are obvious influences from the Ring/Grudge as well as a few other choice elements (the sewn lips) I listened to creepy music while working on this to help me stay "in the mood"...succeeded in freaking myself out (I am weak!)

Done in Photoshop in about 8 hours.

ETA 2019:  Thinking of redoing this one and putting it up on my print shop eventually.  Wonder what I should keep in mind when I do...see anything I should adjust?

Hello! My name's Jay, and I'm here from www.deviantart.com/projectcomm…

The level of detail here is very amazing. Personally, I tend to direct my attention to lighting and shading, especially in horror based works like this, where I think it's really important. The shadows were done perfectly and give her a slightly decayed appearance in my opinion. The design also caught my eye, it captures the spirit of the Ring quite perfectly. Her messy long hair, twisted fingers, and grin give a very chilling effect. The stitched mouth is some great body horror and the blood dripping from her mouth and finger nails are very nice details. The texture of her skin was also very well done, I like the bulging veins and that cross like-scar on her left hand. I also noticed that you can see that her right eyes is missing through the part in her hair, or is that half of her face just missing? Either way that was a very good choice. The only two flaws I noticed were that the front bangs of her hair don't seem to hit the floor properly, specifically the one on her right. I can't tell if this is intentional or not, but maybe it should have more of an obvious bend like rest of her hair? The other one is her eye, it looks like it was intended to stare straight at the viewer but it seems to be staring slightly above the viewer, again I can't really tell if this is intentional or not, though the bloodshot effect was really well done. But those were very minor things that had to look really hard for. Overall, this is a very well done piece. I'd also like to give compliments for how the hair was drawn, it looks like it took a lot of work and it's really nicely done, same for her hands.

I hope his helps in some way.
